In the Mother City for the holidays? Look no further if you want to know where to find the coolest updated eateries and bars
WORDS: NICKY OBEL
You may be visiting Cape Town this festive season holidays for the first time since lockdown and wondering where the new cool spots for food and cocktails are these days. Well, wonder now more – here are our new favourites.
Fans of the Madame Zingara group and all the fun they are known for will love their newly renovated Bombay Bicycle Club, simply known as BBC. Sit back, relax and enjoy both their great menu and the eclectic mix of over the top, somewhat crazy but never boring Bohemian décor in this holidays. Also known as one of the oldest gentleman’s clubs in the world, the BBC was redesigned by Cape Town’s Onnah Design, who changed the entire internal layout by literally turning it on its head, bringing the bustling city of Bombay to Gardens.
Although the BBC décor may have changed, when it comes to serving up a collection of all-time favourites from the menu, complemented by an ever-changing delightful specials category, those who enter the doors will savour every minute of this unique dining experience. It’s fun, it’s eclectic and it promises to be a meal to remember. Mix that up with some classic cocktails and fabulous themed evenings and the BBC will not disappoint.
Situated in the Grand Pavilion across the promenade on the Sea Point beachfront the place to be in this holidays, patrons can enjoy this vintage haven in one of the Mother City’s favourite seaside suburbs. With its elegant atmosphere and playful spirit, Harry’s Bar is a perfect spot to enjoy a sundowner with the ocean as backdrop. There’s something to be said for the calming combination of a fresh sea breeze and summer sun to add that extra ambience to the bar’s beautifully presented, delicious servings of fresh-from-the-ocean delicacies and unique cocktail choices to enjoy this holidays. Be sure to try their signature Sassy South Side cocktail – it’s simply divine.
Another recently revamped space in the heart of Cape Town, is The Chef’s Studio in Bree Street. This unique concept fuses beautiful interiors, cleverly articulated spaces, fine dining and interactive cooking. Interior designer Monya Eastman of Stokperd is responsible for the new look.
The Chef’s Studio hosts dining experiences and master classes for those who not only savour excellent food, but who get excited about cooking and preparing it too. Food aficionados can explore their culinary abilities under the guidance of a professional chef, before indulging in a multiple course meal, showcasing the best that fine dining has to offer. There’s also a communal table for social dining and an elegant private dining area which bring beautiful memories enjoying the holidays.
